Reed was born to a middle-class Jewish family in Brooklyn, the son of a tax accountant and a former beauty queen. Growing up from the age of 11 on Long Island, he was sent to a psychiatric hospital for electroconvulsive therapy, intended to cure him of a general hostility to his parents and what they believed to be homosexual instincts. (Williams, 2013).
