BA (Hons.) Textiles for Fashion Year 2
Module Title: Global & Environmental Issues within the Fashion Industry.
Lecturer: Sarah Gallagher
Title: Global Fashion and Textile Manufacturing Report
Date set: March 2nd 2015
Final assessment: March 30th 2015
Introduction
Many countries are developing specialisms in order to compete for business whether through innovations in textile technology or a commitment to luxury goods and high quality finishing. China and Asia are a growing force in fashion and textile production while countries more traditionally associated with fashion and textile manufacturing are feeling increased economic pressure.
Ethical and environmental issues are high on the agenda. Retailers have to balance cost with quality, while making every effort to uphold ethical and environmental principles.
The Brief
1.Create a research folder
Create a professionally presented research folder containing all your sources of information about the global fashion and textile manufacturing industry. This can be in the form of relevant fashion journal articles, newspaper coverage and internet down loads but there must be clear written evidence and highlighting on each piece which shows your thought processes, ideas and how you may want to use them in your report.
You should also include any primary research which you have carried out to identify where fashion garments on U.K. high streets are being manufactured.
2.Create a Report - there are two options
Write a feature for the trade journal Drapers investigating particular issues involved in the changing face of international fashion and textile manufacturing relating to key environmental and ethical issues.
This is a journal report, so layout, visual interest and written style is also important. It is aimed at readers who are fashion industry professionals so make sure that your tone is informative and appropriate - minimum 1500 words
Or
Create a PowerPoint presentation covering key environmental and ethical challenges that the fashion and textiles manufacturing industry are facing in today’s society: imagine you are presenting at a fashion summit conference to an informed audience of fashion industry professionals. Support your presentation with word processed notes.
Content
Having absorbed your research, decide on a title for your article/presentation which focuses on particular issues within the topic of Global Fashion and Textile production linked to environmental and ethical concerns. Your report could focus on some of the issues below:
To underpin your points quote information from your research such as facts and figures, case studies and actual comments from industry professionals using appropriate referencing techniques.
Beware of Plagiarism
At the front of your research file I would like a complete bibliography of all your sources using the Harvard system of referencing
Aims
To provide an understanding of the fashion and textile markets globally.
