PROJECT BRIEF - RESEARCH FILE
1. WHAT? (carry out ongoing research throughout the year. This will form the basis of your CRITICAL RESEARCH REPORT)
- The RESEARCH FILE should be a ringbinder/box file of all of the research which you have carried out for the CRITICAL RESEARCH REPORT.
- All subjects will require considerable secondary research (books, articles, newspapers etc) and some subjects may develop primary research (surveys, questionnaires, interviews etc).

MATHS ALERT ... PRIME NUMBERS!
What is a prime number?
A prime number is a number greater than 1 that can't be divided exactly by any other number except 1 or itself without leaving a remainder. Children will often encounter prime numbers for the first time when talking about sharing ... One way of thinking of prime numbers is to imagine them as the numbers that don't allow you to share your sweets fairly. If you have 15 sweets, then you can divide them exactly between 5 children (3 sweets each) or 3 children (5 sweets each). But if you have 13 sweets, there's no number of children where you can divide the sweets up evenly - except for 1 and 13.
The first few prime numbers are 2 (the only even prime number), 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17 and 19. Mathematicians delight in finding prime numbers that are record-brakingly large, and they know that every time they work out the latest 'biggest' prime number, there is certain to be one that is even bigger. (How do they know this? A Greek called Euclid proved it over 2,000 years ago. His proof is beautiful but a bit hard for young children... (Eastway and Askew, 2015, p.151).

MATHS ALERT OVER
- Secondary research should include information concerning the historical, technical, social and theoretical development of your subject.
- Secondary research into the historical and technical is easier than the social and theoretical. Your research will be like an inverted triangle starting with the bigger picture and progressing to the smaller detail.

- The RESEARCH FILE should contain annotated notes and photocopies from your secondary research.
Annotation can be done on the computer or by hand.
- The RESEARCH FILE should include a BIBLIOGRAPHY (Harvard) of all secondary research sources used.

- The RESEARCH FILE should include images.
- The RESEARCH FILE should include planning and written drafts for the CRITICAL RESEARCH REPORT.
This student blog at http://study-well.tumblr.com is impressive, unless it is avoidance.
'It was arithmetic homework and all Anna had written was the date and "Problems" at the top of the page. She had drawn a little box shape around "Problems" with a ruler and had followed this with a wavy line in red ink. Then she had decorated the wavy line with dots and surrounded it with a zigzag shape and more dots in blue. All this had taken her the best part of an hour.' (Kerr, 1998, pp.194-5).
The RESEARCH FILE should include any primary research undertaken.
2. HOW? (make sure it is fully referenced and well organised ...)
Begin your BIBLIOGRAPHY straight away.
The information you need to record for books is
- Author's surname
- Author's initial/s
- Date
- Title
- Place of publication
- Publisher
The information you need to record for online articles is
- Author's surname
- Author's initial/s
- Date that it was last updated
- Title
- Http address
- Date that you accessed it
Quotations from printed books, journals and newspapers need the page number as well as the publication details.
Initial research will be arranged in order of when you access it but as your research progresses you will need to categorize it.
3. WHY? (learning outcomes...)
he learning outcomes which are important for the assessment of the RESEARCH FILE are in bold underlined
- To self-manage ongoing independent academic research on subjects of personal interest within fashion and textiles.
- To show understanding of the relationship between academic research and studio practice.
- To show knowledge of the historical, technical and social development of post-industrial fashion and textiles.
- To show awareness of theoretical issues within fashion and textiles.
- To present research (secondary and original) in an academic form (written and verbal) conforming to academic conventions (Harvard reference system).
- To show analysis and evaluation of research.
4. WHEN? (hand in ... )
- BA3 = March 2017
5. ASSESSMENT
The RESEARCH FILE will be assessed on:
- SELF-MANAGEMENT - research
- HISTORICAL, TECHNICAL and SOCIAL - general background contextualisation
- THEORETICAL - theoretical perspective
- ANALYSIS and EVALUATION - planning and drafts for CRITICAL RESEARCH REPORT
- REFERENCING and PRESENTATION - Harvard referencing, organisation and final presentation
