The woman's barrister, Susan Meek, said she was entitled to wear the niqab under the section of the European convention on human rights relating to religious beliefs.
"She is entitled to wear it in private and in public," Meek said. "That right to wear the niqab also extends to the courtroom. There is no legislation in the UK in respect of the wearing of the niqab. There is no law in this country banning it." (Walker, 2013).

Across Britain, it seems students are showing a new surge of interest in joining up to be part-time police officers. It's not any extra income that attracts them – being a special constable is a voluntary job, though they put in 16 hours on duty each month – but in a depressed jobs market, many realise the value of the experience. (Moorhead, 2013a). The shift suggests Beckham – that mistress of glamour – may be loosening up a little. (Cronin, 2013). Just before I leave, he tells me about his 2010 commission to redesign the England football shirt: he came up with the idea of multicoloured crosses of St George. "The red and white thing has been entirely marginalised by one kind of person. It's synonymous with an attitude that is naive, xenophobic, bullying and self-marginalising. I thought, that's not reflective of the team, or football, or of the nation at all. But it turns out the market for those shirts are those bloody-minded xenophobic individuals with the shaved heads. When it came out, they did not like it. They did not like it at all." to talk about gender-specific issues invokes cries of "misandry" from the What About The Men brigade. According to some, anyone who mentions breast cancer therefore doesn't care about prostate cancer, anyone who mentions "domestic violence" doesn't care that men are victims of violence too. Female genital mutilation? What about circumcision? And so it goes ludicrously on, as though any woman speaking about these issues does not have sons, fathers, lovers. (Moore, 2013c). Three Indian politicians, all ministers in the Karnataka state government from the conservative Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata party, resigned last year after being filmed watching porn clips on a mobile phone during a session of the state parliament. The three, who included the minister for women and child development, had initially insisted they were not "enjoying" the video so did not need to step down, while one said he was trying to turn the phone off at the time. (Henley, 2013). 'And my dream was always to build a design school that has all the different worlds that make you feel – from the design of clothes or a pair of sunglasses or shoes or bags, to furniture, architecture, web design, event design, physical space design, retail and offices, to packaging and video and photography, print, colour, textiles, music. Because they're all the senses.' (Bailey in Barton, 2013). The commercial, made by an agency in Johannesburg, features a bullet with the words: "Uhh dad I'm gay," hurtling towards a heart made of china. It has the tagline: "You need a strong heart today," near the Flora logo and against a pink background. (Smith, 2013a). Show me a women who has no navy blue in her wardrobe and I'll show you a woman who lacks style. Seriously. The absence of black in a wardrobe is understandable – after all it can be draining and downbeat as much as it can be slimming and fierce. The absence of fashiony puce or pea green indicates common sense as much as it might signal a trend-of-whatever-season refusnik. But a lack of navy blue in all its inky, expensive-looking glory? That's a wardrobe nonsense. (Fox, 2013b). Fresh from the manicurist, many Instagram their new looks around the world. (Cartner-Morley, 2013). |
